Über J. Christopher Wines / Willamette Valley Pinot Noir:

“Jay Somers is easily one of Oregon’s best winemakers...When you try J. Christopher Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2008 you’ll agree that 2008 is a remarkable vintage...this is dense, concentrated pinot noir of real character and ideal balance between fruit and acidity. Although mighty tasty now, this wine is assuredly structured for the long haul and will likely improve...for upward of a decade...a classic ‘get it while you can’ bottling.”
— Matt Kramer, The Oregonian (June 13, 2010)
The 2008 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir shows a lot like a young Burgundy, and is an excellent example of Oregon’s nearly perfect 2008 vintage. A cool growing season resulted in a small crop (about 20 percent below average), but long hang time — the perfect conditions for concentrated fruit. Beautiful weather during harvest allowed growers to pick at optimal ripeness. This combination of conditions made it possible to produce concentrated wines with great structure and elegance. One sip of the J. Christopher 2008 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir confirms the vintage buzz. The wine presents bright, focused aromas of earth, raspberry and toast, following through with dark fruit and smoky black cherries on the palate, and ending in a sweet, lingering finish. Supported by outstanding structure, the wine leaves an overall impression of focus, purity and elegance. The 2008 Willamette Valley Pinot was sourced from four excellent vineyard sites, primarily in the red Jory clay of the Dundee Hills AVA: La Colina, Croft, Charlie’s Vineyard, and Bella Vida.
This wine spent 16 months in barrel, with 25% new French oak. Total production: 1,275 cases.
Located in Oregon’s Northern Willamette Valley, J. Christopher Wines is a small winery that specializes in Pinot Noir made in the traditional style of Burgundy. It is owned by Jay Somers, who has been making wine in Oregon for more than 15 years. Jay’s wines are hand-crafted in small lots and are sourced from some of the best vineyards in Oregon. The philosophy at J. Christopher is to produce wines in an Old World style that emphasizes focus, length and balance. As Jay puts it, “We do not make sweet red fruit bombs! We want wines that have a fine balance of fruit, acidity and texture. We want wines that give you more than just a big mid-palate blast — wines that are complete.”
