The 2007 Dundee Hills Pinot Noir greets you warmly with aromas of lavender, violets, dusty cherry and minerals. Dark cherries come through on the palate, nestled in soft tannins, supported by a silky texture, and framed by perfectly balanced acidity. This is a seamless wine that leaves you with a long and lingering finish. The 2007 vintage is a blend of the best barrels from five excellent vineyard sites in the red Jory clay of the Dundee Hills AVA. The majority of the fruit is from Le Pavillon, an older vineyard planted in 1972. Abbey Ridge, with its 25- to 30-year-old vines,and Charlie’s Vineyard, another of the great sites in the Dundee Hills, also contributed fruit. A few barrels from Bella Vida (the primary source for the “Appassionata” Pinot Noir that Jay makes in collaboration with Ernst Loosen) and from La Colina Vineyard also went into the blend. All told, this is classic Dundee Hills Pinot Noir — or, as Ernst calls it, “Super Pinot!”
The wine spent 18 months in barrel, with 20% new French oak.
Total production: 688 cases.

It is owned by Jay Somers, who has been making wine in Oregon for more than 15 years. Jay’s wines are hand-crafted in small lots and are sourced from some of the best vineyards in Oregon. The philosophy at J. Christopher is to produce wines in an Old World style that emphasizes focus, length and balance. As Jay puts it, “We do not make sweet red fruit bombs! We want wines that have a fine balance of fruit, acidity and texture. We want wines that give you more than just a big mid-palate blast — wines that are complete.”
